The following needs to be installed before Root Around can be used:
Component | Type | Version | Download | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|
Database | MySQL Community Server | 8.0.28 or greater | https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ | Free |

The following screen appears when Root Around is first opened to establish a connection to the database that stores all of the Root Around commands.
Provide a unique name for the connection, such as "DEFAULT - LOCAL," and then the database URL, username and password that you created when you installed MySQL.
If desired, click "Test" to determine if a successful connection can be made.
Example of a successful database connection attempt:
Example of an unsuccessful database connection attempt:
If the database connection succeeds during the "Test" and if desired, click "Save" to save the connection to be able to use again in the future, with or without the password. If choosing to save the password, please be informed that you are responsible for the security risk that this creates.
Team Sharing
You can create and save as many database connections as needed. For example, a connection can be created and saved to a local database hosted on your personal computer to be used for personal use only, and another connection can be created and saved to a remote database on a centralized server to be shared within a team. Once logged in, you can quickly and easily change database connections if needed, such as to export commands from the shared database to import into your personal Root Around Command Box, or vice versa.
Click "Clear" to clear the Connection Name, Database URL, Username, and Password and to permanently delete the connection if it had been previously saved.
When ready, click "Connect" to open your Root Around Command Box. If this is your first time opening Root Around, the Command Box will be empty until you either manually add commands, and/or until you import a dump file of commands either directly into the MySQL database or import through Root Around's "Import" utility located in the File menu.
Changing Database Connections
After connecting, validate the database that you are connected to by navigating to the "Tools" menu and clicking "Database Connection." From the "Database Connection Details" screen, you can also change database connections if desired by clicking the "Change Connection" button. Once connected to a MySQL database, Root Around is immediately ready for use.
